Question 21: International Relations and Current Affairs

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Republicans won majority in the US House of Representatives election held in the year 2006.
  2. 2.Republican Bobby Jindal won a seat in the US House of Representatives for the second time.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerThe answer is (b).

In the November 2006 US mid-term elections the Democrats, not the Republicans, won control of the House of Representatives. Bobby Jindal, a Republican from Louisiana, was first elected to the House in 2004 and won again in 2006, so his second win is correct. Statement 1 fails, statement 2 holds.

  • 1. The Democrats won the House majority in 2006.
  • 2. Jindal was elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2006.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: The Democrats won the House majority in 2006.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Jindal was elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2006.

Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 1 is false; the Democrats won the House.
  • (b) Correct: only statement 2 holds.
  • (c) Statement 1 is false.
  • (d) Statement 2 is true, so this is wrong.
