Question 17: International Relations and Current Affairs

Which one of the following Himalayan passes was reopened in the middle of the year 2006 to facilitate trade between India and China?

aChang La
bJara La
cNathu La
dShipki La

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Nathu La, on the Sikkim-Tibet border, was reopened on 6 July 2006 for border trade between India and China, after being shut since the 1962 war. The route links Sikkim with Lhasa and is part of the old trade road. Remember: Nathu La (Sikkim) and Shipki La (Himachal) and Lipulekh (Uttarakhand) are the three border trade passes.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Chang La is a pass in Ladakh, not the one reopened for trade in 2006.
  • (b) Jara La was not the pass reopened for trade in 2006.
  • (c) Correct: Nathu La, in Sikkim, reopened in July 2006.
  • (d) Shipki La is in Himachal Pradesh; the 2006 reopening was at Nathu La.
