Question 119: Science and Technology
In human beings, normally in which one of the following parts does the sperm fertilize the ovum?
aCervix
bFallopian Tube
cLower Part of Uterus
dUpper Part of Uterus
AnswerThe answer is (b).
In humans fertilization normally takes place in the Fallopian tube (oviduct), in its wide upper part. The fertilized egg then travels to the uterus and implants in its wall. The cervix and the uterus are not the sites of fertilization. Remember: fertilization in the tube, implantation in the uterus.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The cervix is the neck of the uterus, where sperm only pass.
- (b) Correct: fertilization takes place in the Fallopian tube.
- (c) The lower uterus is not where the sperm meets the egg.
- (d) The upper uterus is where the embryo implants, not where fertilization occurs.
