Production of which one of the following is a function of the liver?
aLipase
bUrea
cMucus

AnswerThe answer is (b).
The liver turns toxic ammonia into urea through the ornithine cycle, and the urea is then removed by the kidneys. The liver also makes bile, but not the digestive enzyme lipase (made by the pancreas), mucus (made by the stomach and intestinal lining) or hydrochloric acid (made by the stomach).
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Lipase is made mainly by the pancreas.
- (b) Correct: the liver makes urea.
- (c) Mucus is made by the stomach and intestinal lining.
- (d) Hydrochloric acid is made by the stomach.
