Question 111: Science and Technology
In the human body, to which structure is the appendix attached?
aThe large intestine
bThe small intestine
cThe gall-bladder
dThe stomach
AnswerThe answer is (a).
The appendix is a small, finger-like pouch attached to the caecum, the first part of the large intestine, near where the small intestine joins it. In humans it has no real digestive role, though it holds some lymphoid tissue. It is not attached to the small intestine, gall-bladder or stomach.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Correct: the appendix hangs from the caecum of the large intestine.
- (b) The small intestine joins the large intestine here but does not carry the appendix.
- (c) The gall-bladder stores bile and has no appendix.
- (d) The stomach is far from the appendix.
