Question 98: Geography

Claims to the historical Macedonian territory have been a bone of contention between which of the following countries?

aPortugal and Spain
bBulgaria and Greece
cRomania and Bulgaria
dPortugal and Greece

AnswerThe answer is (b).

The historical region of Macedonia is divided among Greece, Bulgaria and the present North Macedonia (then called the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). Greece and Bulgaria have both laid claim to its territory and heritage, notably in the Balkan Wars of 1912-13. Portugal and Spain lie in Iberia, and Romania has no such claim.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Portugal and Spain are in Iberia, far from Macedonia.
  • (b) Correct: Bulgaria and Greece, whose territory includes parts of historical Macedonia.
  • (c) Romania has no claim to Macedonia.
  • (d) Portugal has no claim to Macedonia.
