Question 9: Geography

What is the new administrative capital proposed for Myanmar?

aBassein
bMandalay
cMyitkyina
dPyinmana

AnswerThe answer is (d).

In November 2005 Myanmar's military government began shifting its administrative capital from Yangon (Rangoon) to a new site near Pyinmana in the central part of the country; the new capital was later named Naypyidaw. Bassein (Pathein) is a port in the Irrawaddy delta, Mandalay the old royal city and cultural centre, and Myitkyina the capital of Kachin State. Pyinmana is the answer.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Bassein (Pathein) is a delta port, not the new capital.
  • (b) Mandalay is the former royal capital and a cultural centre.
  • (c) Myitkyina is the capital of Kachin State in the north.
  • (d) Correct: the new capital was built near Pyinmana (now Naypyidaw).
