Question 89: Polity and Governance
Which one of the following pairs is not correctly matched?
aStates Reorganization Act : Andhra Pradesh
bTreaty of Yandabu : Assam
cState of Bilaspur : Himachal Pradesh
dYear 1966 : Gujarat becomes a State
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Gujarat became a State on 1 May 1960 when the bilingual Bombay State was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat, not in 1966. In 1966 Punjab was reorganised and Haryana created. The other pairs hold: the States Reorganisation Act 1956 shaped Andhra Pradesh, the Treaty of Yandabu (1826) gave Assam to the British, and Bilaspur merged with Himachal Pradesh in 1954.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The 1956 Act is linked with the formation of Andhra Pradesh; accepted as matched.
- (b) The Treaty of Yandabu (1826) ended the first Anglo-Burmese War and transferred Assam; correct.
- (c) Bilaspur became part of Himachal Pradesh in 1954; correct.
- (d) Gujarat became a State in 1960, not 1966; this is the wrong pair.
