Question 48: Science and Technology

Which one among the following is not a good source of nutritional calcium?

aRice
bRagi
cSkimmed milk
dEgg

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Rice is poor in calcium, with very little per 100 grams, so it is not a good source. Ragi (finger millet) is one of the richest plant sources of calcium, and milk, including skimmed milk, is a major dietary source. Eggs also supply some calcium, mostly in the yolk. When asked for the poor source of calcium, pick the cereal; ragi is the exception among cereals.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: rice has very little calcium.
  • (b) Ragi is a rich plant source of calcium.
  • (c) Skimmed milk keeps its calcium; it is a good source.
  • (d) Egg contributes useful calcium, so it is not the poorest source here.
