Question 42: Economy and Social Development

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.In India, during the financial year 2004-2005 an increase of below 10 % over the value of exports (in rupee terms) in the financial year 2003-2004 was reported.
  2. 2.According to the WTO, India’s share in the world merchandise exports is 2 % in the year 2005.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerThe answer is (d).

India's exports grew by well over 20 per cent in 2004-05 compared with 2003-04, far above 10 per cent, so statement 1 is false. According to the WTO, India's share of world merchandise exports in 2005 was close to 1 per cent, not 2 per cent, so statement 2 is false too.

  • 1. Exports rose by over 20 per cent in 2004-05.
  • 2. India's WTO share in 2005 was about 1 per cent.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: Exports rose by over 20 per cent in 2004-05.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) goes: it includes 2.

What you needed to know: India's WTO share in 2005 was about 1 per cent.

Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Exports grew by over 20 per cent, not under 10 per cent.
  • (b) India's share in 2005 was near 1 per cent, not 2 per cent.
  • (c) Both statements are false.
  • (d) Correct: neither statement holds.
