Question 36: Geography
From north towards south, which one of the following is the correct sequence of the given rivers in India?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Going from north to south, Shyok (in the Karakoram, Ladakh) lies furthest north, then the Zaskar in Zanskar, then the Spiti in Himachal Pradesh, and finally the Satluj, which the Spiti joins and which flows southwest towards Punjab. So the order is Shyok, Zaskar, Spiti, Satluj. All four are Himalayan rivers of the Indus system, so the sequence follows the line of the Great Himalaya from Ladakh downward.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Puts Spiti north of Zaskar, which reverses their positions.
- (b) Correct: Shyok, Zaskar, Spiti, Satluj from north to south.
- (c) Puts Zaskar north of Shyok; the Shyok is further north.
- (d) Puts Zaskar and Satluj before Shyok and Spiti, which breaks the order.
