Question 26: Geography
In which one of the following oceans is Diamantina Trench situated?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The Diamantina Trench (also called the Diamantina Fracture Zone) lies in the south-eastern Indian Ocean, to the south-west of Australia. It is an Indian Ocean feature, and should not be confused with the better-known Pacific trenches such as the Mariana, Tonga and Kermadec, or with the Puerto Rico Trench in the Atlantic. For ocean-feature questions, learn the ocean for each famous trench and deep.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The Mariana, Tonga and Kermadec trenches are in the Pacific; Diamantina is not.
- (b) The Puerto Rico Trench is the Atlantic's deep; Diamantina is elsewhere.
- (c) Correct: the Diamantina Trench is in the south-eastern Indian Ocean.
- (d) The Arctic Ocean has no major trench like this.
