Question 15: Science and Technology
Consider the following statements with reference to the human body:
- 1.The common bile duct releases its contents into the stomach.
- 2.The pancreatic duct releases its contents into the duodenum.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (b).
The common bile duct, formed by the common hepatic duct and the cystic duct, opens into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, not the stomach. The main pancreatic duct joins it at the hepatopancreatic ampulla and also empties into the duodenum, delivering digestive enzymes. Both bile and pancreatic juice therefore act in the duodenum, where fats are emulsified and food is broken down further. Only statement 2 is correct.
- 1. The common bile duct opens into the duodenum, not the stomach.
- 2. The pancreatic duct releases pancreatic juice into the duodenum.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.
What you needed to know: The common bile duct opens into the duodenum, not the stomach.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (d) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: The pancreatic duct releases pancreatic juice into the duodenum.
Only (b) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Statement 1 is false: bile enters the duodenum, not the stomach.
- (b) Correct: the pancreatic duct opens into the duodenum.
- (c) Statement 1 is false, since the bile duct does not open into the stomach.
- (d) Statement 2 is true, so this is wrong.
