Question 146: Geography

Bermuda triangle extends up to which of the following places?

  1. 1.Southern Florida
  2. 2.Puerto Rico
  3. 3.Hawaii Islands

Select the correct answer using the code given below:

a1, 2 and 3
b1 and 2 only
c2 and 3 only
d1 and 3 only

AnswerThe answer is (b).

The Bermuda Triangle, in the western North Atlantic, is the area marked by lines joining Bermuda, Puerto Rico and the southern tip of Florida (Miami). Hawaii lies in the Pacific, thousands of kilometres away. So Southern Florida and Puerto Rico are correct and Hawaii is not.

  • 1. Southern Florida is one corner of the triangle.
  • 2. Puerto Rico is another corner.
  • 3. Hawaii is in the Pacific.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: Hawaii is in the Pacific.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Hawaii is in the Pacific.
  • (b) Correct: Southern Florida and Puerto Rico.
  • (c) Leaves out Southern Florida and includes Hawaii.
  • (d) Includes Hawaii and leaves out Puerto Rico.
