Question 143: International Relations and Current Affairs

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.The Nobel Prize Awarding Ceremony takes place on December 10 every year.
  2. 2.The Nobel Prize for Literature was added later on to the other five areas – Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Peace and Economics.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 only
b2 only
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerThe answer is (a).

The Nobel Prizes are presented every year on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death in 1896, so statement 1 is correct. The original five prizes (1901) were Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace; Economics was added later (1969). So Literature was not added later, and statement 2 is false.

  • 1. The ceremony is held on 10 December, the anniversary of Nobel's death.
  • 2. Literature was one of the original prizes; Economics came later.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: The ceremony is held on 10 December, the anniversary of Nobel's death.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (c) goes: it includes 2.

What you needed to know: Literature was one of the original prizes; Economics came later.

Only (a) is left. This one needs every statement.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: only statement 1 holds.
  • (b) Statement 2 is false: Economics was the later addition.
  • (c) Statement 2 is false.
  • (d) Statement 1 is true.
