Question 129: History and Culture
Between which of the following was the ancient town of Takshasila located?
aIndus and Jehelum
bJhelum and Chenab
cChenab and Ravi
dRavi and Beas
AnswerThe answer is (a).
Takshashila (Taxila), a famous centre of learning and a Gandhara city, was located between the Indus and the Jhelum, near present-day Rawalpindi in Pakistan. Tradition links the teacher Chanakya (Kautilya) with it. It is not between the other river pairs offered, which lie further east in the Punjab.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Correct: between the Indus and the Jhelum.
- (b) The Jhelum-Chenab doab is further east.
- (c) The Chenab-Ravi doab is further east.
- (d) The Ravi-Beas doab is further east.
