Question 91: Economy and Social Development

Consider the following statements :

  1. 1.Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is liquefied under extremely cold temperatures and high pressure to facilitate storage or transportation in specially designed vessels.
  2. 2.First LNG terminal in India was built in Hassan.
  3. 3.Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) are separated from LPG and these include ethane, propane, butane and natural gasoline.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 only
b1 and 3
c2 and 3
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Statement 1 is right: LNG is natural gas cooled to about minus 162 degrees Celsius so that it shrinks to a liquid roughly 600 times smaller, for storage and shipping in special vessels. Statement 2 is wrong: India's first LNG terminal was Dahej in Gujarat, commissioned in 2004, not Hassan. Statement 3 is accepted by the key: natural gas liquids are ethane, propane, butane and natural gasoline.

  • 1. LNG is natural gas liquefied by deep cooling, for storage and transport in special vessels.
  • 2. India's first LNG terminal was at Dahej, Gujarat.
  • 3. Counted correct by the key: NGLs include ethane, propane, butane and natural gasoline.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: India's first LNG terminal was at Dahej, Gujarat.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: Counted correct by the key: NGLs include ethane, propane, butane and natural gasoline.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statement 1.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Misses statement 3, which the key accepts.
  • (b) Given answer: statements 1 and 3.
  • (c) Statement 2 is false: the first terminal was at Dahej.
  • (d) Statement 2 is false.

Worth knowing: Statement 3 is loosely worded, since NGLs are recovered from natural gas and LPG itself is made of some of them, so a strict reading gives (a); the key accepts (b).
