Question 88: Science and Technology

Assertion (A): The main constituent of the Liquefied Petroleum Gas is methane. Reason (R): Methane can be used directly for burning in homes and factories where it can be supplied through pipelines.

aBoth A and R are individually true and R is the correct explanation of A
bBoth A and R are individually true but R is not the correct explanation of A
cA is true but R is false
dA is false but R is true

AnswerThe answer is (d).

The main constituents of LPG are propane and butane, not methane, so A is false; methane is the main constituent of natural gas (CNG and piped natural gas). R is true: methane can be supplied by pipeline and burnt directly in homes and factories. R is true, but it does not rescue A.

  • A. LPG is mainly propane and butane.
  • R. Methane, as natural gas, is supplied by pipeline for direct burning.

How you could have got this

If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, only (d) is left: every other option says it is correct.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) A is false: LPG is mainly propane and butane.
  • (b) A is false.
  • (c) A is false, and R is true.
  • (d) Correct: A is false, R is true.
