Question 61: History and Culture
Consider the following statements: On the eve of the launch of Quit India Movement, Mahatma Gandhi
- 1.Asked the Government servants to resign.
- 2.Asked the soldiers to leave their posts.
- 3.Asked the Princes of the Princely States to accept the sovereignty of their own people.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
In his instructions on the eve of Quit India in 1942, Gandhi asked princes to accept the sovereignty of their own people, so statement 3 is right. He did not ask government servants to resign but to declare allegiance to the Congress, and he told soldiers not to leave their posts or fire on their own people, so statements 1 and 2 are wrong.
- 1. Government servants were told not to resign but to declare allegiance to the Congress.
- 2. Soldiers were told not to leave their posts.
- 3. Princes were asked to accept the sovereignty of their own people.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.
What you needed to know: Soldiers were told not to leave their posts.
Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 3.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Both statements 1 and 2 are wrong.
- (b) Statement 2 is wrong: soldiers were told not to leave their posts.
- (c) Correct: only statement 3 holds.
- (d) Statements 1 and 2 are wrong.
