Question 58: History and Culture

In October 1920, who of the following headed a group of Indians gathered at Tashkent to set up a communist party of India?

aH.K. Sarkar
bP.C. Joshi
cM.C. Chagla
dM.N. Roy

AnswerThe answer is (d).

In October 1920, at Tashkent, M.N. Roy with Abani Mukherji, Evelyn Trent and other Indian revolutionaries set up a Communist Party of India. The party formed inside India at Kanpur in 1925 is usually counted as a separate founding. P.C. Joshi led the party later, in the 1930s and 1940s.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) H.K. Sarkar did not lead the Tashkent group.
  • (b) P.C. Joshi led the party later, not in 1920.
  • (c) M.C. Chagla was a jurist, not a communist founder.
  • (d) Correct: M.N. Roy headed the Tashkent group.
