Question 53: History and Culture
Which one of the following territories was not affected by the Revolt of 1857?
aJhansi
bChittor
cJagdishpur
dLucknow
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Chittor (Mewar) stayed out of the Revolt of 1857: the Rajput states largely stayed loyal to the British. Jhansi (Rani Lakshmibai), Jagdishpur in Bihar (Kunwar Singh) and Lucknow (Begum Hazrat Mahal) were all centres of the revolt. Remember that Rajasthan saw only scattered mutinies, such as at the Nasirabad cantonment, and none at Chittor.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Jhansi was a major centre under Rani Lakshmibai.
- (b) Correct: Chittor was not affected.
- (c) Jagdishpur was Kunwar Singh's base in Bihar.
- (d) Lucknow was a major centre of the revolt.
