Question 39: History and Culture
Consider the following statements:
- 1.Champaner - Pavagadh Archaeological Park
- 2.Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Station, Mumbai
- 3.Mamallapuram
- 4.Sun Temple (Konark Temple)
Which of the above are included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO?
AnswerThe answer is (d).
All four are on UNESCO's World Heritage List: Mamallapuram's group of monuments and the Sun Temple at Konark (both listed in 1984), and Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly Victoria Terminus, in Mumbai (both listed in 2004). So 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all correct.
- 1. Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park was listed in 2004.
- 2. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was listed in 2004.
- 3. Mamallapuram was listed in 1984.
- 4. The Sun Temple at Konark was listed in 1984.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park was listed in 2004.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was listed in 2004.
- Then, if you were sure statement 4 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 4 out.
What you needed to know: The Sun Temple at Konark was listed in 1984.
Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Leaves out the Sun Temple, Konark, which is listed.
- (b) Leaves out Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, which is listed.
- (c) Leaves out Champaner-Pavagadh and Mamallapuram, both listed.
- (d) Correct: all four are World Heritage Sites.
