Question 27: Economy and Social Development

Where do the Sahariya tribals, who were recently in the news, live?

aAndhra Pradesh
bAssam
cRajasthan
dOrissa

AnswerThe answer is (c).

The Sahariya are a tribal community of Rajasthan, concentrated in the Baran district (Shahbad and Kishanganj blocks) in the south-east of the state; smaller numbers live in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh. They are the only Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group of Rajasthan. Andhra Pradesh, Assam and Orissa are home to other tribes, not the Sahariyas.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Andhra Pradesh has other tribes, such as the Chenchus.
  • (b) Assam has other tribes, such as the Bodos and Misings.
  • (c) Correct: the Sahariyas live mainly in Rajasthan.
  • (d) Orissa has other tribes, such as the Kondhs and Santals.
