Question 23: History and Culture
Consider the following statements : The Government of India Act, 1935 provided for
- 1.The provincial autonomy
- 2.The establishment of Federal Court
- 3.All India Federation at the centre
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (d).
The Government of India Act, 1935 introduced provincial autonomy (in force from 1937), set up the Federal Court and provided for an All India Federation of the provinces and the princely states. The federation never came into being because the princes did not accept it, but the Act did provide for it, so all three statements are correct.
- 1. The Act gave the provinces autonomy, in force from 1937.
- 2. It established the Federal Court.
- 3. It provided for an All India Federation, though it never came into being.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.
What you needed to know: It provided for an All India Federation, though it never came into being.
The red flag in statement 3 is “all”. In UPSC’s papers, statements with “all” were true 41% of the time (76 statements). A hint, not a rule.
- Then, if you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: The Act gave the provinces autonomy, in force from 1937.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: It established the Federal Court.
Only (d) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Misses statement 3: the Act provided for an All India Federation.
- (b) Misses statement 1: the Act gave provincial autonomy.
- (c) Misses statement 2: the Act established the Federal Court.
- (d) Correct: all three were provided for.
