Question 146: Economy and Social Development
Which one of the following statements is not correct?
aThere is no definition of the Scheduled Tribe in the Constitution of India.
bNorth-East India accounts for a little over half of the country’s tribal population.
cThe people known as Todas live in the Nilgiri area.
dLotha is a language spoken in Nagaland.
AnswerThe answer is (b).
Most of India's tribal population lives in central and western India (Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Gujarat and neighbouring states), so the North-East has far less than half, and (b) is the incorrect statement. The others are right: the Constitution gives no definition of a Scheduled Tribe, the Todas live in the Nilgiris, and Lotha is a Naga language spoken in Nagaland.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The Constitution defines no Scheduled Tribe; Article 342 lets the President notify them.
- (b) Correct answer: the North-East has far less than half of India's tribal people.
- (c) The Todas live in the Nilgiri area.
- (d) Lotha is a Naga language of Nagaland.
