Question 135: Geography

In which one of the following countries did hundreds of people die in the year 2004 as a result of flooding and mudslides triggered by Tropical Storm Jeanne?

aColombia
bHaiti
cSudan
dGhana

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Tropical Storm Jeanne struck Haiti in September 2004; flooding and mudslides, especially in the city of Gonaives, killed some 3,000 people. Jeanne later became a hurricane and hit Florida. Colombia, Sudan and Ghana saw no such disaster from the storm. Remember Haiti as the country that suffered most from the 2004 Atlantic hurricane season.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Colombia was not hit by Jeanne's floods.
  • (b) Correct: Haiti, where flooding killed thousands.
  • (c) Sudan was not hit by Jeanne's floods.
  • (d) Ghana was not hit by Jeanne's floods.
