Question 132: Science and Technology

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Dengue is a protozoan disease transmitted by mosquitoes.
  2. 2.Retro-orbital pain is not a symptom of Dengue.
  3. 3.Skin rash and bleeding from nose and gums are some of the symptoms of Dengue.

Which one of the following statements is/are correct?

a1 and 2
b3 only
c2 only
d1 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Dengue is caused by a virus (not a protozoan, unlike malaria) and spread by Aedes mosquitoes, so statement 1 is wrong. Severe pain behind the eyes, retro-orbital pain, is a typical symptom, so statement 2 is wrong. Skin rash and bleeding from the nose and gums occur, especially in dengue haemorrhagic fever, so statement 3 is right.

  • 1. Dengue is a viral disease, not a protozoan one.
  • 2. Retro-orbital pain is a typical symptom.
  • 3. Rash and bleeding from the nose and gums can occur.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: Dengue is a viral disease, not a protozoan one.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (c) goes: it includes 2.

What you needed to know: Retro-orbital pain is a typical symptom.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statements 1 and 2 are both false.
  • (b) Correct: only statement 3 holds.
  • (c) Statement 2 is false: retro-orbital pain is a symptom.
  • (d) Statement 1 is false: dengue is viral.
