Question 130: Science and Technology
Which one of the following diseases of milching animals are infectious?
- 1.Foot and Mouth disease
- 2.Anthrax
- 3.Black Quarter
- 4.Cowpox
Select the correct answer using the codes given below:
AnswerThe answer is (d).
All four are infectious diseases of milch animals: foot and mouth disease (a virus spread by contact), anthrax (a bacterial disease that can also infect people), black quarter, also called black leg (a bacterial disease), and cowpox (a viral disease that can pass to humans). So items 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all correct.
- 1. Foot and mouth disease is a highly infectious viral disease.
- 2. Anthrax is an infectious bacterial disease.
- 3. Black quarter is an infectious bacterial disease.
- 4. Cowpox is an infectious viral disease.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Foot and mouth disease is a highly infectious viral disease.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Anthrax is an infectious bacterial disease.
- Then, if you were sure statement 4 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 4 out.
What you needed to know: Cowpox is an infectious viral disease.
Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Leaves out cowpox, which is infectious.
- (b) Leaves out foot and mouth disease, which is infectious.
- (c) Leaves out anthrax and black quarter, both infectious.
- (d) Correct: all four are infectious.
