Question 127: Geography

Which one of the following is the correct sequence of the given Indian cities in the decreasing order of their normal annual rainfall?

aKochi – Kolkata – Delhi – Patna
bKolkata – Kochi – Patna – Delhi
cKochi – Kolkata – Patna – Delhi
dKolkata – Kochi – Delhi – Patna

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Normal annual rainfall is about 3,000 mm at Kochi (south-west monsoon on the Malabar coast), about 1,600 mm at Kolkata, about 1,100 mm at Patna and about 700-800 mm at Delhi. So the order is Kochi, Kolkata, Patna, Delhi. Rainfall falls as one moves west along the Ganga plain, away from the Bay of Bengal.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Puts Delhi above Patna; Patna gets more rain.
  • (b) Puts Kolkata above Kochi; Kochi gets more.
  • (c) Correct: Kochi, Kolkata, Patna, Delhi.
  • (d) Puts Kolkata above Kochi and Delhi above Patna; both wrong.
