AnswerThe answer is (b).

Uttar Pradesh borders Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar, and Nepal. Of the four listed, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand touch it, while Punjab does not. So items 2, 3 and 4 are correct.

  • 1. Punjab does not border Uttar Pradesh.
  • 2. Rajasthan borders Uttar Pradesh on the west.
  • 3. Chhattisgarh borders Uttar Pradesh in the south-east.
  • 4. Jharkhand borders Uttar Pradesh in the south-east.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: Punjab does not border Uttar Pradesh.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 2, 3 or 4.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
