Question 108: Economy and Social Development

Which one of the following pairs are correctly matched? Enterprise — Industrial Group

  1. 1.VSNL — Bharti Group
  2. 2.Mundra Special Economic Zone Ltd — Adani Group
  3. 3.CMC Ltd — Tata Group
  4. 4.IPCL — Reliance Group

Select the correct answer using the codes given below:

a1, 2 and 3
b3 and 4
c1, 2 and 4
d2, 3 and 4

AnswerThe answer is (d).

VSNL, the overseas telecom company, was privatised in 2002 and went to the Tata Group, not Bharti, so pair 1 is wrong. Mundra SEZ is an Adani Group project, CMC Ltd came under the Tata Group (through TCS) in 2001, and IPCL was taken over by Reliance in 2002, so pairs 2, 3 and 4 are right.

  • 1. VSNL was acquired by the Tata Group, not Bharti.
  • 2. Mundra Special Economic Zone Ltd is an Adani Group company.
  • 3. CMC Ltd came under the Tata Group.
  • 4. IPCL was taken over by the Reliance Group.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) and (c) go: each of them includes 1.

What you needed to know: VSNL was acquired by the Tata Group, not Bharti.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Mundra Special Economic Zone Ltd is an Adani Group company.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statements 3 or 4.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Pair 1 is wrong: VSNL went to the Tata Group.
  • (b) Drops pair 2, which is right.
  • (c) Pair 1 is wrong, and pair 3 is right.
  • (d) Correct: pairs 2, 3 and 4.
