Question 10: Geography

For which one of the following countries, is Spanish not an official language?

aChile
bColombia
cRepublic of Congo
dCuba

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Spanish is an official language in Chile, Colombia and Cuba, all former Spanish colonies in the Americas. The Republic of Congo, in Central Africa, was a French colony and its official language is French. Do not confuse it with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which also uses French as its official language.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Spanish is official in Chile.
  • (b) Spanish is official in Colombia.
  • (c) Correct: the Republic of Congo uses French, not Spanish.
  • (d) Spanish is official in Cuba.
