Question 92: Science and Technology

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research uses fast reactor technology.
  2. 2.Atomic Minerals Directorate for Research and Exploration is engaged in heavy water production.
  3. 3.Indian Rare Earths Limited is engaged in the manufacture of Zircon for India's nuclear programme beside other rare earth products.

Which of these statements given above are correct?

a1, 2 and 3
b1 and 2
c1 and 3
d2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Statements 1 and 3 are correct. The Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research at Kalpakkam works on fast breeder reactor technology. Indian Rare Earths Limited processes beach sands, producing zircon and other rare-earth products. Heavy water is produced by the Heavy Water Board; the Atomic Minerals Directorate explores for atomic minerals, so statement 2 is wrong.

  • 1. IGCAR works on fast reactor technology.
  • 2. AMD explores for atomic minerals; heavy water is made by the Heavy Water Board.
  • 3. IREL produces zircon and other rare-earth products.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (a), (b) and (d) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: AMD explores for atomic minerals; heavy water is made by the Heavy Water Board.

Only (c) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 3.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 2 is wrong: AMD does not produce heavy water.
  • (b) Statement 2 is wrong, and statement 3 is left out.
  • (c) Correct: statements 1 and 3 hold.
  • (d) Statement 2 is wrong, and statement 1 is left out.
