Question 84: Economy and Social Development

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Voltas
  2. 2.Titan Industries
  3. 3.Rallis India
  4. 4.Indian Hotels

Which of the above companies are in the Tata Group of Industries?

a1 and 2
b2, 3 and 4
c1, 3 and 4
d1, 2, 3 and 4

AnswerThe answer is (d).

All four are Tata Group companies: Voltas (engineering and cooling products), Titan Industries (watches), Rallis India (agrochemicals) and Indian Hotels (the Taj group). So all four statements hold. Remember that the Tata Group also includes Tata Steel, Tata Motors, TCS and Tata Power, among others.

  • 1. Voltas is a Tata company.
  • 2. Titan Industries is a Tata company.
  • 3. Rallis India is a Tata company.
  • 4. Indian Hotels (Taj) is a Tata company.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.

What you needed to know: Voltas is a Tata company.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 2 out.

What you needed to know: Titan Industries is a Tata company.

  3. Then, if you were sure statement 3 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 3 out.

What you needed to know: Rallis India is a Tata company.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 4.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Leaves out Rallis India and Indian Hotels, which are also Tata companies.
  • (b) Leaves out Voltas, which is also a Tata company.
  • (c) Leaves out Titan, which is also a Tata company.
  • (d) Correct: all four are Tata companies.
