Question 68: Geography
Assertion (A): Bangalore receives much higher average annual rainfall than Mangalore. Reason (R): Bangalore has the benefit of receiving rainfall both from south-west and north-east monsoons.
AnswerThe answer is (d).
The assertion is false and the reason is true. Mangalore, on the windward west coast, gets very heavy south-west monsoon rain, over 3,000 mm a year, while Bangalore lies on the plateau in a rain-shadow and gets under 1,000 mm. Bangalore does receive rain in both the south-west and north-east monsoon seasons, so the reason is a true fact that does not support the false assertion.
- A. Mangalore gets far more rain than Bangalore.
- R. Bangalore receives rain in both monsoon seasons.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) A is false, so this cannot be right.
- (b) A is false, so this cannot be right.
- (c) R is true, so this cannot be right.
