Question 49: History and Culture

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Hema Malini is the Chairperson of the Children's Film Society, India.
  2. 2.Yash Chopra is the Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification of India.
  3. 3.Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand have all been recipients of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

a1 and 3
b2 and 3
c2 only
d3 only

AnswerThe answer is (d).

Only statement 3 is correct. Dilip Kumar (1994), Raj Kapoor (1987) and Dev Anand (2002) are all Dadasaheb Phalke Award winners. Yash Chopra was not the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification, and the key marks Hema Malini's chairmanship of the Children's Film Society as not current when the question was set.

  • 1. The key marks this false: she was not the current chairperson.
  • 2. Yash Chopra was not chairperson of the CBFC.
  • 3. All three are Dadasaheb Phalke Award winners.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 1 is not correct, (a) goes: it includes 1.

What you needed to know: The key marks this false: she was not the current chairperson.

  2. Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (b) and (c) go: each of them includes 2.

What you needed to know: Yash Chopra was not chairperson of the CBFC.

Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Includes statement 1, which the key marks false.
  • (b) Includes statement 2, which is false.
  • (c) Statement 2 is false and statement 3 is true.
  • (d) Correct: only statement 3 holds.

Worth knowing: Statement 1 depends on who held the Children's Film Society chair when the question was set, a fact that has changed since; the key treats it as false.
