Question 38: Science and Technology
Consider the following statements:
- 1.Adam Osborne produced the first portable computer.
- 2.Ian Wilmut created the first cloned sheep.
Which of these statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Both statements are correct. Adam Osborne's Osborne 1 (1981) is regarded as the first commercially successful portable computer. Ian Wilmut and his team at the Roslin Institute in Scotland created Dolly, the first mammal cloned from an adult cell, born in 1996 and announced in 1997.
- 1. Adam Osborne produced the first portable computer, the Osborne 1.
- 2. Ian Wilmut led the team that cloned Dolly the sheep.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) and (d) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Adam Osborne produced the first portable computer, the Osborne 1.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Ian Wilmut led the team that cloned Dolly the sheep.
Only (c) is left. This one needs every statement.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Statement 2 is also correct.
- (b) Statement 1 is also correct.
- (c) Correct: both statements hold.
- (d) Both statements are correct, so this is wrong.
