Question 33: Polity and Governance
The resolution for removing the Vice-President of India can be moved in the
aLok Sabha alone
bEither House of Parliament
cJoint Sitting of Parliament
dRajya Sabha alone
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Under Article 67(b) the Vice-President is removed by a resolution of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) passed by a majority of all its then members and agreed to by the House of the People. The resolution can therefore be moved only in the Rajya Sabha, after 14 days' notice. This differs from the President's impeachment, which can begin in either House.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The Lok Sabha only agrees to a resolution already passed by the Rajya Sabha.
- (b) Either House applies to the President's impeachment, not to the Vice-President.
- (c) No joint sitting is provided for this.
- (d) Correct: the resolution is moved in the Rajya Sabha alone.
