Question 2: History and Culture
Consider the following statements:
- 1.Narasimha Saluva ended the Sangama dynasty and seized the throne for himself and started the Saluva dynasty.
- 2.Vira Narasimha deposed the last Saluva ruler and seized the throne for himself.
- 3.Vira Narasimha was succeeded by his younger brother, Krishnadeva Raya.
- 4.Krishnadeva Raya was succeeded by his half-brother, Achyuta Raya.
Which of these statements given above are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (d).
All four statements are accepted as correct. Saluva Narasimha displaced the last Sangama ruler and began the Saluva dynasty in the 1480s. Vira Narasimha of the Tuluva line removed the last Saluva king around 1505. Krishnadeva Raya, his younger half-brother and the greatest Vijayanagara king, followed him in 1509, and was himself succeeded in 1529 by his half-brother Achyuta Raya. Remember the order of the dynasties: Sangama, Saluva, Tuluva, Aravidu.
- 1. Saluva Narasimha ended the Sangama line and founded the Saluva dynasty.
- 2. Vira Narasimha deposed the last Saluva ruler and seized the throne.
- 3. Krishnadeva Raya, his younger (half-)brother, succeeded him.
- 4. Achyuta Raya, Krishnadeva's half-brother, succeeded him.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (b) goes: it leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Saluva Narasimha ended the Sangama line and founded the Saluva dynasty.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is correct, (c) goes: it leaves 2 out.
What you needed to know: Vira Narasimha deposed the last Saluva ruler and seized the throne.
- Then, if you were sure statement 4 is correct, (a) goes: it leaves 4 out.
What you needed to know: Achyuta Raya, Krishnadeva's half-brother, succeeded him.
Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Leaves out statement 4, which is true.
- (b) Leaves out statement 1, which is true.
- (c) Leaves out statements 2 and 3, which are both true.
