Question 144: Science and Technology

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Smart Card is a plastic card with an embedded microchip.
  2. 2.Digital Technology is primarily used with new physical communication medium such as satellite and fibre optics transmission.
  3. 3.A digital library is a collection of documents in an organized electronic form available on the Internet only.

Which of these statements given above is/are correct?

a3 only
b1 and 2
c2 and 3
d1, 2 and 3

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Statements 1 and 2 are correct. A smart card is a plastic card with an embedded microchip. Digital technology is used with newer media such as satellite and fibre-optic transmission. A digital library is not limited to the Internet: its collections can sit on CD-ROMs, intranets or other electronic media, so statement 3, with its 'only', is wrong.

  • 1. A smart card has an embedded microchip.
  • 2. Digital technology goes with satellite and fibre-optic media.
  • 3. A digital library need not be on the Internet only.

How you could have got this

  1. If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (a), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.

What you needed to know: A digital library need not be on the Internet only.

The red flag in statement 3 is “only”. In UPSC’s papers, statements with “only” were true 27% of the time (82 statements). A hint, not a rule.

Only (b) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.

This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.

Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 3 is false.
  • (b) Correct: statements 1 and 2.
  • (c) Statement 3 is false, and statement 1 is left out.
  • (d) Statement 3 is false.
