Question 141: Science and Technology
Consider the following statements:
- 1.Femur is the longest bone in the human body.
- 2.Cholera is a disease caused by bacteria.
- 3.‘Athlete’s foot’ is a disease caused by virus.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (a).
Statements 1 and 2 are correct. The femur, the thigh bone, is the longest bone in the human body. Cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Athlete's foot is a fungal infection, a type of ringworm, not a viral one. Remember: cholera is bacterial; ringworm and athlete's foot are fungal; polio and measles are viral.
- 1. The femur is the longest bone.
- 2. Cholera is bacterial.
- 3. Athlete's foot is caused by a fungus.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 3 is not correct, (b), (c) and (d) go: each of them includes 3.
What you needed to know: Athlete's foot is caused by a fungus.
Only (a) is left. You didn’t need statements 1 or 2.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Correct: statements 1 and 2.
- (b) Statement 3 is false: athlete's foot is fungal.
- (c) Statement 3 is false, and statement 2 is left out.
- (d) Statement 3 is false.
