Question 138: International Relations and Current Affairs

The record for the highest score in an innings in Test Cricket is now being held by M. Hayden. Immediately prior to him, the three record holders were

aDon Bradman, Sunil Gavaskar and Colin Cowdrey
bLen Hutton, Peter May and Vivian Richards
cHanif Mohammed, Garfield Sobers and Brian Lara
dBob Cowper, Bill Lawry and Brian Lara

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Before Matthew Hayden's 380 (October 2003), the record was Brian Lara's 375 (1994). Before that it was Garfield Sobers's 365 not out (1958), and before that Hanif Mohammad's 337 (1958). So the three holders just before Hayden, in order, were Hanif Mohammad, Sobers and Lara.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Gavaskar and Cowdrey never held the record, and Bradman's was long before.
  • (b) Hutton held it, but May and Richards never did.
  • (c) Correct: Hanif Mohammad, Sobers, Lara.
  • (d) Cowper and Lawry never held the record.

Worth knowing: Lara regained the record with 400 not out in April 2004, so the question's 'now' no longer holds; the three earlier holders are unchanged.
