Question 133: Economy and Social Development
Consider the following statements: As per 2001 Census
- 1.The two States with the lowest sex ratio are Haryana and Punjab.
- 2.The two States with the lowest population per sq km of area are Meghalaya and Mizoram.
- 3.Kerala has both the highest literacy rate and sex ratio.
Which of these statements given above is/are correct?
AnswerThe answer is (d).
Statements 1 and 3 are correct. In the 2001 Census Haryana (861) and Punjab had the lowest sex ratios. The lowest densities were in Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, not Meghalaya, so statement 2 is wrong. Kerala had both the highest literacy rate and the highest sex ratio (1,058).
- 1. Haryana and Punjab had the lowest sex ratios.
- 2. Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram had the lowest densities.
- 3. Kerala led in both literacy and sex ratio.
How you could have got this
- If you were sure statement 1 is correct, (a) and (b) go: each of them leaves 1 out.
What you needed to know: Haryana and Punjab had the lowest sex ratios.
- Then, if you were sure statement 2 is not correct, (c) goes: it includes 2.
What you needed to know: Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram had the lowest densities.
Only (d) is left. You didn’t need statement 3.
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Leaves out statement 1, which is also correct.
- (b) Statement 2 is wrong.
- (c) Statement 2 is wrong.
- (d) Correct: statements 1 and 3.
