Question 123: Polity and Governance

Consider the following events:

  1. 1.Fourth general elections in India
  2. 2.Formation of Haryana State
  3. 3.Mysore named as Karnataka State
  4. 4.Meghalaya and Tripura become full States

Which one of the following is the correct chronological order of the above?

a2 ‑ 1 ‑ 4 ‑ 3
b4 ‑ 3 ‑ 2 ‑ 1
c2 ‑ 3 ‑ 4 ‑ 1
d4 ‑ 1 ‑ 2 ‑ 3

AnswerThe answer is (a).

Haryana was formed in 1966, the fourth general elections were held in 1967, Meghalaya and Tripura became full States in 1972, and Mysore was renamed Karnataka in 1973. So the order is 2, 1, 4, 3. Remember the years: 1966, 1967, 1972, 1973. Haryana's formation came before the fourth general election, and the other two changes came after it.

  • 1. The fourth general elections (1967) come second.
  • 2. Haryana (1966) comes first.
  • 3. Mysore renamed Karnataka (1973) comes last.
  • 4. Meghalaya and Tripura as full States (1972) come third.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Correct: Haryana, fourth elections, Meghalaya and Tripura, Karnataka.
  • (b) Puts Meghalaya and Tripura first, which is wrong.
  • (c) Puts Karnataka before Meghalaya and Tripura, and the elections last, which is wrong.
  • (d) Puts Meghalaya and Tripura first, which is wrong.
