Question 59: Economy and Social Development
Consider the following statements
- 1.India’s import of crude and petroleum product during the year 2001-02 accounted for about 27% of India’s total imports.
- 2.During the year 2001-02, India’s exports had increased by 10% as compared to the previous year
Which of these statements is/are correct?
aOnly 1
bOnly 2
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2
AnswerThe answer is (a).
Statement 1 is accepted: crude oil and petroleum products were about a quarter of India's imports in 2001-02 (the key takes about 27 per cent). Statement 2 is false: India's exports in 2001-02 did not grow by 10 per cent; they were flat or slightly lower than in 2000-01, after a year of strong growth. Remember that oil is India's single largest import item.
- 1. Oil imports were about 27 per cent of total imports in 2001-02, as the key accepts.
- 2. Exports did not rise by 10 per cent in 2001-02; they were flat or slightly down.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Correct: only statement 1.
- (b) Statement 2 is false: exports did not rise by 10 per cent.
- (c) Statement 2 is false, so both cannot hold.
- (d) Statement 1 is accepted as true, so 'neither' fails.
