Question 36: Economy and Social Development
During the year 2000-01, which one of the following industries recorded highest growth rate in India?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The key gives electricity as the fastest-growing of the four industries in 2000-01. Questions of this kind are answered from the Economic Survey's table of infrastructure industries (coal, electricity, steel, cement and others) for the year named, so the ranking of one particular year has to be learned from that table, not inferred from the long-term trend.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) Per the key, cement did not post the highest growth.
- (b) Per the key, coal did not post the highest growth.
- (c) Correct, per the key: electricity recorded the highest growth.
- (d) Per the key, steel did not post the highest growth.
Worth knowing: I cannot confirm the 2000-01 growth figures from memory, and other compilations rank these industries differently, so treat this answer with caution.
