Question 13: Geography

Nanda Devi peak forms a part of

aAssam Himalayas
bKumaon Himalayas
cNepal Himalayas
dPunjab Himalayas

AnswerThe answer is (b).

Nanda Devi (7,816 m) stands in Uttarakhand, in the Kumaon Himalayas. Burrard's regional division runs west to east: Punjab Himalayas (Indus to Sutlej), Kumaon (Sutlej to Kali), Nepal (Kali to Tista) and Assam (Tista to Brahmaputra). Nanda Devi is the highest peak wholly within India, while Kanchenjunga, on the Sikkim-Nepal border, is the highest in India overall.

Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) The Assam Himalayas lie east of the Tista, in the far north-east.
  • (b) Correct: Nanda Devi is in the Kumaon Himalayas.
  • (c) The Nepal Himalayas lie between the Kali and the Tista; Nanda Devi is west of the Kali.
  • (d) The Punjab Himalayas lie west of the Sutlej.
