Question 129: Science and Technology

With reference to normal human beings, consider the following statements:

  1. 1.In response to the presence of HCl, secretin is produced from the duodenum
  2. 2.Enterogastrone is produced in the small intestine in response to the presence of fatty acids

Which of these statements is/are correct?

aOnly 1
bOnly 2
cBoth 1 and 2
dNeither 1 nor 2

AnswerThe answer is (c).

Both statements are correct. Acid (HCl) in the food entering the duodenum stimulates its lining to release secretin, which prompts the pancreas to release bicarbonate-rich juice. Fatty acids in the small intestine stimulate the release of enterogastrone, which reduces gastric secretion and motility. Remember: secretin responds to acid, enterogastrone to fats.

  • 1. Acid in the duodenum triggers secretin release.
  • 2. Fatty acids in the small intestine trigger enterogastrone release.
Why each option is right or wrong
  • (a) Statement 2 is also correct, so 'only 1' is incomplete.
  • (b) Statement 1 is also correct, so 'only 2' is incomplete.
  • (c) Correct: both.
  • (d) Both are correct, so 'neither' fails.
