Question 124: Polity and Governance
Which of the following Constitutional Amendments are related to raising the number of Members of Lok Sabha to be elected from the States?
AnswerThe answer is (c).
Two Amendments dealt with the Lok Sabha's size from the States: the Seventh (1956), made with the reorganisation of States, and the Thirty-first (1973), which raised the ceiling on members elected from the States from 500 to 525. The others concern different subjects: the 6th sales tax, the 22nd Meghalaya, the 13th Nagaland, the 38th emergency powers, the 11th the election of the Vice-President and the 42nd a wide set of changes.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) The 6th (sales tax) and 22nd (Meghalaya) are not about Lok Sabha seats.
- (b) The 13th (Nagaland) and 38th (emergency) are not about Lok Sabha seats.
- (c) Correct: the 7th and 31st.
- (d) The 11th (election of the Vice-President) and 42nd (wide changes) are not about Lok Sabha seats.
