Question 103: Geography
Assertion (A): The eastern coast of India produces more rice than the western coast. Reason (R): The eastern coast receives more rainfall than the western coast.
AnswerThe answer is (c).
The east coast produces more rice than the west coast, helped by the fertile deltas of the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Cauvery and a larger cropped area, so A is true. But R is false: the west coast, where the Western Ghats block the south-west monsoon, receives far more rainfall than the east coast. East-coast rice depends heavily on delta irrigation and on the north-east monsoon.
- A. The east coast, with its large deltas, grows more rice than the west coast.
- R. The west coast gets more rainfall than the east coast.
How you could have got this
This follows an unofficial answer: UPSC has not published its key for this year, and if that answer is wrong, so is this path.
Which options go is worked out from UPSC’s key and the options, not by a model.
Why each option is right or wrong
- (a) R is false, so it cannot explain A.
- (b) R is false, so 'both true' fails.
- (c) Correct: A is true and R is false.
- (d) A is true, so 'A false' fails.
